The activities of all Austrian nature parks are underpinned by the four pillars of conservation, recreation, education and regional development. The aim is to promote the equal coexistence of these areas so that the beautiful, characteristic cultural landscapes, with their biological diversity, can be preserved.
CONSERVATION
Through sustainable use, nature parks preserve and safeguard the diversity and beauty of the cultural landscape shaped by centuries of management. This is achieved through biodiversity projects, contractual nature conservation, conservation area stewardship and management, natural history information, research projects and visitor management.
RECREATION
Nature parks offer special recreational opportunities through attractive facilities that are in keeping with the character of the landscape. Since 1962, particularly beautiful natural and cultural landscapes in Austria have been awarded the designation ‘Nature Park’. These include hiking trails, themed trails, rest and relaxation areas, adventure playgrounds adapted to the natural environment, as well as family-friendly and accessible facilities.
EDUCATION
Interactive ways of understanding and experiencing nature make it possible to bring nature, culture and their interconnections to life in the spirit of education for sustainable development. Nature park schools and nurseries, themed trails, information points and centres, activities tailored to specific target groups, partnerships and much more support the educational mission that is so important to us.
REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Nature parks provide important impetus for regional development, enhancing the quality of life and adding value to a region. This is achieved through effective collaboration, based on defined criteria, between agriculture, industry, tourism, culture and more, thereby creating regional jobs
